This is my sister's scrapbook. She's a member of the School Zoologists' Association. She has many scrapbooks. This one's on birds in Sri Lanka, both local and migrant.

🦆 Feugian Steamer Duck
Habitat: South America
Physical Features: The largest steamer duck in the world. Males weigh 3.5 to 7 kg. They have bluish grey feathers on the head and neck with a reddish brown throat. Females have darker grey feathers and a dark reddish throat.
Food: Small snails, insect larvae, and small crustaceans.
Special Behavior: They run across water thrashing their short wings like the wheels on a steamboat. Known to be very aggressive and fight fiercely over territory.
🐦 Inaccessible Island Rail
Habitat: Found only on Inaccessible Island in the Tristan Archipelago (South Atlantic Ocean)
Physical Features: The smallest flightless bird in the world. About 17 cm in length, weighs 30 grams. Dark grey and dark rusty brown feathers. Red eyes and black bill. Has a loud trilling call.
Food: Earthworms, moths, berries, and seeds.
Special Info: Lives on steep slopes and grasslands. No threats from predators, so they roam freely.
🐧 Emperor Penguin
Habitat: Antarctica only
Physical Features: One of the most famous flightless birds. White stomach, black head, back, tails and wings. Yellow-gold markings on the side of their head and neck. Distinctive waddling walk. Average height: 115 cm.
Food: Fish, squid, and krill.
Special Behavior: Male penguins keep eggs safe and warm by balancing them on their feet and covering with feathered skin. Very skilled swimmers and divers.
🦜 Takahe
Habitat: New Zealand grasslands (using shrubs for shelter)
Physical Features: Adult males are purplish-blue with a greenish back and inner wings. Large red frontal shield. Red based pink bill.
Food: Grass, shoots, and insects.
Special Info: Believed extinct since late 1800s but discovered alive in 1948! Can live up to 20 years. Threatened by hunting, predation, and habitat loss.
🥝 Kiwi
Habitat: New Zealand (National Bird)
Physical Features: Only bird with nostrils on the tip of its bill (not at the base). Brown color, same size as a chicken. Hidden wings and soft hair-like feathers.
Food: Uses sense of smell to find food
Special Info: Females lay the biggest egg relative to body size of any living species - up to 500 grams!
🦅 Cassowary
Habitat: Tropical forests of Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and northeastern Australia
Physical Features: Third tallest and second heaviest living bird. Has a dagger-like claw up to 4 inches long on the middle toe of each foot.
Food: Fruit, shoots, and grass seeds.
Special Info: Known to be shy but if provoked, capable of deadly attacks. Called "living dinosaurs".
